POP3 (Post Office Protocol Version 3) is a data communication protocol enabling standalone e-mail clients (like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Мail for Маc, etc.) to process e-mails on a remote server. The client does not need to be permanently connected to the server – it needs to check for new e-mail messages once in a while and download them. Our POP3 servers are configured on ports 110 and 1100.
For maximum security, we support POP3S (POP3 over SSL). All client-server connections are encrypted using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), which renders man-in-the-middle attacks impossible. Our POP3S servers are configured on port 995. POP3 protocol is limited in direct comparison to IMAP, because it allows only listing, downloading and deletion of messages.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a modern e-mail data communication protocol enabling standalone e-mail clients (like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Мail for Маc, etc.) to process e-mails on a remote server. Compared to POP3, IMAP allows performing all e-mail modifications directly on the server without downloading messages first. Our IMAP servers are configured on port 143.
For maximum security, we support IMAPS (IMAP over SSL) on port 993, which renders man-in-the-middle attacks impossible.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a protocol used for e-mail messages transportation between separate computers and/or servers. It is used for sending e-mails from a standalone e-mail client, which connects to our servers and transfers the message. Afterwards our servers are responsible for the fast and accurate final delivery to the destination e-mail address. Our SMTP server is configured on port 25. Many ISPs block port 25 to prevent unwanted spam distribution, so we offer port 587 as an alternative one. Both ports can be used for establishing TLS encrypted connection which prevents man-in-the-middle attacks.

E-mail transmitted worms and viruses have recently become quite a problem not only for users around the world, but for Internet Service Providers as well. Here at ICDSoft we employ a simple but very powerful anti-virus solution. When enabled, the anti-virus software will scan all incoming messages. In case viruses are found, the server will not deliver the infected messages to the user's mailbox. The anti-virus software is disabled by default. It can be enabled from the Mail Manager in the online Control Panel.

If a certain mailbox is assigned as a "Catch-all" mailbox, all messages designated to non-existing mailboxes in your domain, will be delivered to this mailbox. If you have a mailbox mail@example.com and a business partner of yours sends an e-mail to ail@example.com omitting "m" from the beginning, this e-mail won’t be lost if you have a "Catch-all" mailbox. In the example given you may have set up the catchall@example.com "Catch-all" mailbox which will receive the e-mail for ail@example.com.

By using e-mail redirection you can redirect each incoming message to another e-mail address, even to more than one. You specify if a copy of each redirected e-mail is left on the server. For example e-mail redirection may come in handy when you want your company to have one primary mailbox used by your business partners. Each partner can have a separate mailbox, but each e-mail is redirected to the primary mailbox, leaving a copy in the partner’s mailbox. This allows you to have access to all received messages in the primary mailbox. All e-mails inside cannot be deleted by mistake from a business partner as you are the only one with access to the primary mailbox. Please take into account that the "Catch-all" mailbox cannot be redirected.

By using the Autorespond function you can define a standard answer to any incoming e-mail. This feature is useful when you are on a vacation – instead of continuously checking your mailbox, the Autoresponder informs your clients that their questions will be answered when you are back to work.

There is no limit on the incoming or outgoing e-mail size. You can receive or send e-mails as large as the free space in your e-mail mailbox or your hosting account. In case you send an e-mail without leaving a copy on the server, the e-mail size is limited to the receiving server’s capabilities and these limitations are irrelevant.

In case you have your own e-mail server and you want to use it for your e-mail management, the configuration is as simple as checking a few options in our DNS Manager. For reliability reasons in case your e-mail server goes offline, you may choose to configure our e-mail server as backup. This way you are protected from network problems, power outages or hacker attacks on your own e-mail server. When our backup server receives an e-mail, it will try to send it to your own (primary) e-mail server until it succeeds. Please note that using this feature prevents you from creating mailboxes on our server and you will have to handle this task on your own e-mail server.

SpamAssassin is a powerful anti-spam filter. By analyzing each incoming message and evaluating it against a set of predefined rules created by us, the probability of each e-mail being spam is evaluated in a scale from 1 to 10. You can define a threshold from 1 to 10 and if a message exceeds your settings, it is treated as spam and is routed into your spam mailbox folder. SpamAssassin supports whitelists and blacklists with e-mail addresses. For more information about SpamAssassin, please consult our documentation.

Spamdyke is a software against spam working on SMTP-level, e.g. before all other filters like SpamAssassin. Spammers often send e-mail messages from computers whose IP addresses don’t have a reverse DNS (rDNS) record. Spamdyke makes sure that the computer which sends the e-mail has rDNS and if this isn’t the case, the e-mail sending process is terminated without reaching further anti-spam software. Spamdyke can be turned on or off for all mailboxes.

Graylisting is part of the Spamdyke software. Before a particular e-mail is delivered into your mailbox, it has to be delivered from the sender’s server to ours first. When the remote server tries to accomplish this, our server rejects the message, but writes into an internal table the address of the remote server. If the remote e-mail server is a legitimate one and is configured correctly, it will try to deliver the message again. Then our server will accept the message. Graylisting exploits a known spammer weakness – after the first failure they often don’t try to send the e-mail again.

By using Header Filters, you can define your own anti-spam rules based on e-mail message headers. All incoming e-mails matching some of these rules will be dropped or redirected to your Spam Folder if you have enabled it. If you decide that a certain word in the Subject field suggests a spam message, you can create a new filter for this word. Some of the predefined headers in each e-mail are: From, To, CC, content-type, Received. Of course, you can always define your own headers with no restriction on their count. Each spammer can spoof your identity and put your e-mail as a reply address. When the message from the spammer can’t be delivered, the receiving server (let’s name it “X”) will use your address and reply that the message from the spammer was not delivered.
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a DNS record used to prevent spammers of entering your e-mail address as a reply address when sending spam. It describes which computer or server can send messages for your domain. If the server “X” checks the SPF record for your domain, it will see that the spammer isn’t allowed to send e-mails from your e-mail address and will automatically drop the message. You can create an SPF record via the DNS Manager of the Control Panel. For more information, please refer to http://www.openspf.org/.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an Internet protocol for data transfers. .ftpaccess is a plain text file used for configuration of the FTP server. You can use several directives effectively controlling the behavior of the FTP server. For example you can enable/disable the FTP access only from trusted IP addresses or restrict access to some directories for certain user accounts. SSL is a protocol that uses encryption to safeguard the transmission of sensitive data. Compatible with all modern browsers, it is wise to use SSL when you process credit card transactions on your website, or when you have password-protected areas of your site.

At ICDSoft, your site visitors will be able to connect through SSL using a shared security certificate. If you wish to install a personal security certificate (dedicated to your domain only), you need to purchase one from a certificate authority. Our fee to install a personal security certificate is €8 per year.

You may require secure transactions support in your site. For example if you have installed a shopping cart functionality and you sell items online through secure connection (address starting with https:// in your web browser), a private SSL certificate issued with your name from a certification authority is required. You can install your own SSL certificate on our servers. In this case your receive a dedicated IP address and you must pay an annual support fee of €8,00.

Each of our hosting packages allows password protection of individual directories of your web site from unwanted access from a web browser. Users won’t be able to access these directories without a username and password.
The password protection can be turned on very easily from the online Control Panel. You should select the directory you want to protect and enter two fields – username and password. Of course, you can always add new users or delete existing ones.

Mod_security is an Apache module responsible for protection of specific vulnerable software. This additional precaution is activatec by default on our servers as we try to protect the web sites of our clients from hacker attacks.

All hard drives of our servers are organized in the so called RAID6 (Redundant array of independent disks) array. This means that if two hard drives fail at the same time (which is highly unlikely), your information would still be intact. You and your customers won’t notice the difference. In the meanwhile those two hard drives will be changed by our system administrators and the whole array will reconstruct dynamically by itself. Once this process is completed, up to two drives are allowed to fail again without threatening your data. This configuration ensures the highest possible data loss protection.

As all hardware devices fail sooner or later, this could happen to some of our servers. But this doesn’t mean that your web site will be unavailable for a long time. On the contrary! Each server rack (several servers located nearby) has one backup server which is responsible to take over the duties of the servers in the rack in case some of them fail. Then our system engineers will copy the latest backup from a separate RAID6 server, which contains backup of your data from the last 7 days. In no time your site will be operating again thanks to our 24/7 system monitoring and fast reacting system engineers.

Each day we perform automated backup and keep a copy on a remote RAID6 server. We keep all files and directories, e-mails and MySQL databases present by the time the backup is performed. These backup files can be used again through the Control Panel.

Our clients have the ability to perform their own backup manually any time in the day, 24/7. This procedure is allowed once a day. The backup of all files, mailboxes and MySQL databases can be performed through the Control Panel. This is especially useful before any major site contents or used software upgrade, because in case of an unsuccessful update, you can revert back all changes from the backup. Of course, you can restore files, e-mail messages or MySQL databases from our system backup as well.

Our automated monitoring system allows us to monitor and control all servers and their condition in real-time. The SNMP monitoring takes place simultaneously from several locations around the world. This way we can discover any connectivity problems and solve them as fast as possible. In addition, data from each server on the exported services (Web, MySQL, FTP, mail, etc.) is collected and sent every minute to the monitoring system. When the default values are exceeded, our 24/7 Support Team is alerted by an alarm notification of a possible problem with the particular server. Then our team investigates such incidents and ensures that everything is working properly again. Thanks to the design of our surveillance system we are able to detect all possible problems early and take immediate action. The state of each server is collected once per minute and the data is stored in a log file. This allows us to monitor the server status and analyze its condition as well as investigate all sides of the eventual problem.

But even this is not necessary – we make sure that we show a notice at the top of the main page with a brief description of the specific problem at the moment in case of an accident with a server. Once a day our systems extract from the global Apache log file access.log all records related to your subdomain access and store them in the /logs folder on your hosting space. As time passes the system iterates through all your log files and creates archived monthly and yearly reports with subdomain names and data stamps. Please note that the system never deletes your log files. You can use your favorite FTP client to download these well structured and small logs for local analysis with appropriate software in case you find the on-server installed Webalizer and AwStats insufficient.

Each FTP login to your hosting account is logged by the system and once a day your monthly log file from directory /logs is updated with records from the past 24 hours. In the end of the month this file is archived as ftp-log.log-month-year.gz. You have full access to these log files and they are never deleted.

AWStats is a free software for log files analysis which is preinstalled on our servers. You benefit from this simplified ability to analyze the access patterns to your site without having to install additional software or having advanced skills. AWStats has a nice and well organized graphical interface usable directly from a web browser. You can analyze all log files sorted by dates. By default AWStats is disabled for your subdomains, but you can enable it with a simple click in our Control Panel for each one of them. For maximal security you can add username and password protection to the AWStats generated information.

Similar to AWStats, Webalizer is a free software for log file analysis. It has graphical web interface accessible from every web browser. Webalizer is installed on each of our servers and is activated by default for all your subdomains. The access to Webalizer is username and password secured.
